Signs a garage door spring may have failed
- A sharp bang came from the garage and the door now will not lift normally.
- The opener runs but struggles to raise the door.
- The door suddenly feels extremely heavy.
- A visible gap appears in a torsion spring above the door.
- The door rises only a short distance before stopping.
Why spring work requires care
Garage door springs counterbalance a heavy door and operate under substantial tension. Winding, unwinding, replacing, or adjusting connected cable hardware should be handled with the correct tools and procedures.
Do not keep cycling a door with a suspected broken spring. The opener is not a substitute for the counterbalance system.
